Ms. Marie-Thérèse Abi Akel

Senior Speech and Language Therapist

“Every person has a voice. Our role is to make sure it is heard.”

I am Speech and Language Therapist with over 24 years of experience across healthcare, rehabilitation and developmental services in the UAE and Lebanon. Throughout my career, I have combined clinical practice with leadership, service development and multidisciplinary care, with a strong focus on building services that are collaborative, evidence-based and responsive to the needs of children and families.

In leadership roles, I have supported the development and transformation of Allied Health services, built multidisciplinary teams, established clinical programmes and pathways, strengthened clinical governance, and developed partnerships with schools, nurseries and healthcare professionals. I value supportive leadership, professional development and creating environments where different disciplines can work together effectively to provide coordinated care.

As a clinician, I work with children and adolescents with speech, language and communication needs, neurodevelopmental differences, autism, literacy and learning difficulties, fluency disorders, AAC needs, pediatric feeding disorders and selective eating. Early intervention and family-centred care are central to my practice, particularly parent coaching and supporting communication within everyday routines and environments.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based and neurodiversity-affirming practice, recognising each individual’s strengths, differences and preferred ways of communicating. Above all, I believe that communication is a fundamental right for all, and this principle continues to guide both my clinical work and my leadership.
