Speech-Language Therapy

Our speech-language pathologists are specially-educated and trained in assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients, ranging from children through to the elderly, with their speech and language afflictions. These can be caused by known medical conditions, such as strokes, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, or learning disabilities, or even something presently undiagnosed. Either way, our team is ready to devise and implement a treatment program for any of these conditions.

Some of the issues our speech-language pathologists can treat are:
  • Articulation Disorders
  • Phonological Disorders
  • Apraxia of Speech/Dyspraxia
  • Expressive Language Delay/Disorder
  • Receptive Language Delay/Disorder
  • Social Communication/Pragmatic Disorders
  • Stuttering or Stammering
  • Dysphagia (swallowing disorders)
  • Voice disorders

While speech-language pathologists may have academic training to treat a wide variety of disorders or patients, the pathologist may specialize in specific disorders and/or populations (for example, they work with specific groups like children). We believe it is important to find the appropriate speech-language pathologist for every client’s specific needs.

Signs and symptoms of a speech- or language-delay or disorder can include:
  • Being unable to speak
  • Difficulty producing or imitating sounds
  • Frequently or consistently changing word sounds to incorrect sounds
  • Difficulty being understood by others
  • Difficulties in following directions
  • Frequently unable to properly select a specific item in a group of items, when requested by an individual to do so
  • Often being confounded by writing skills or storytelling due to incorrect grammar structure or limited ability to convey one’s thought or meaning
  • Being frustrated by poor academic performance despite efforts to the contrary
  • Difficulty producing smooth and fluent speech
  • Effortful speech, while frequently experiencing loss of voice or hoarseness
  • Episodes of choking or difficulty eating certain foods

If you, or someone you love, experiences any of these struggles on a regular basis, contact the American Wellness Center to see if our speech-language pathologists can identify if a delay or disorder is present. Doing so could avoid any further delays or impairments to one’s speech, language, and/or communication abilities.
