What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy can be an effective form of treatment for school-aged children and teens, particularly in a school setting. Our Group therapy services in schools are helpful to provide a supportive and safe environment for students to discuss their feelings and experiences, learn from each other, and work through any challenges they may be facing.

What are the different types of Group Therapy we have at AWC Dubai?

Our highly qualified and skilled child and educational psychologists offer several types of group therapy which are designed to be highly effective in a school setting.

It is particularly beneficial for children who have difficulty interacting with others, have a hard time managing their emotions, or who have been diagnosed with conditions such as ADHD or Oppositional Defiant Disorder etc.

Trauma-informed group therapy:

In this program, AWC clinicians deal and treat children and teens who have experienced traumatic events, such as abuse or neglect. The aim of this group is to help students process and cope with their traumatic experiences and develop healthy coping mechanisms through evidence-based interventions.

Group counseling for anxiety and depression:

This type of group therapy is designed for children and teens who are identified to struggle with anxiety or / and depression.  Our focus is to help students learn and be aware about their mental health condition and develop strategies for managing their symptoms, such as stress-management techniques, mindfulness practices, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Study skills and organization group therapy:

This type of group therapy is designed to help children and teens who are struggling with academic performance, by teaching them effective study, organization and time management skills, bringing awareness about their shortcomings, highlighting their strengths and guiding them to cope with these and still achieve maximum goals .

Anger management group therapy:

This type of group therapy is designed to help children and teens who struggle managing their emotions and anger during stressful situations or otherwise.  Our main aim is to teach students how to identify and express their feelings, develop coping strategies, and control their anger in appropriate ways. How is Group Therapy Beneficial in Teens?

Group therapy in a school setting can be particularly beneficial for various reasons:
  • It takes place during school hours, making it more accessible for students and their families to join
  • It is usually cost effective
  • It creates a sense of normalcy and continuity of care for students, as they can stay in the same environment, and be surrounded by the same familiar people
  • It helps the therapists to know more about their symptoms while they behave in the same environment / circumstances
  • Group therapy in a school setting can also be integrated with other school-based services such as counseling and academic support, thus creating a more comprehensive approach to help students
  • Teachers can know and participate in any investigation and or feedback about certain situations and the therapists can avail the feedback to make better intervention plan.
