When the words arrive but the meaning doesn't quite land

It can be puzzling for parents. Their child speaks, engages, and seems present — and yet they consistently miss instructions, misread questions, or respond in ways that feel slightly off. Teachers may describe them as inattentive or easily distracted. At home, simple directions need to be repeated several times, or broken down into steps that most children their age would follow without difficulty.

Receptive language disorder is often less visible than expressive difficulties, precisely because the child is still talking. But the challenge of understanding language — processing what is said, extracting meaning, and responding appropriately — can affect every part of a child's day, from following a classroom lesson to keeping up with a conversation among friends.

At American Wellness Center in Dubai Healthcare City, our pediatric speech and language therapy team assesses and treats receptive language difficulties in children and adolescents, helping them build the comprehension skills that underpin communication, learning, and social connection.

Who This Service Is For

This service is appropriate for children whose primary difficulty lies in understanding spoken language rather than — or in addition to — producing it. Families and referrers who typically come to us include:

  • Children aged 2 and above who have difficulty following age-appropriate instructions or directions
  • School-age children who struggle to keep up in class, frequently ask for repetition, or give answers that don't match the question asked
  • Children described by teachers as inattentive when hearing and attention have already been ruled out as primary causes
  • Adolescents who find it hard to follow complex verbal explanations, group discussions, or multi-step instructions
  • Children with co-occurring conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, developmental language disorder, or hearing impairment, where receptive language is a known area of difficulty
  • Bilingual children in Dubai whose comprehension difficulties appear in both or all of their languages

If you are unsure whether your child's difficulty is receptive language, attention, hearing, or something else, an assessment will give you that clarity.

Patterns That Bring Families to Us

Receptive language difficulties are frequently misread — as daydreaming, as willful non-compliance, or as a hearing problem that has already been tested and cleared. Presentations that commonly come through our clinic include:

  • Difficulty following instructions: needing directions repeated, simplified, or demonstrated rather than just spoken
  • Literal interpretation: taking figurative language, idioms, or humor at face value in ways that cause confusion or social friction
  • Inconsistent responses: sometimes appearing to understand and sometimes not, in ways that seem unpredictable to adults
  • Slow processing: needing significantly more time than peers to respond after something is said
  • Difficulty with questions: particularly "why," "how," and "when" questions that require inferencing rather than simple recall
  • Struggling in group settings: losing track in classroom discussions, group activities, or situations where language moves quickly
  • Appearing withdrawn: opting out of conversations or activities where language demands feel overwhelming

Developmental language disorder, which affects both receptive and expressive language, is estimated to affect approximately 7–10% of children. Many go unidentified for years because their difficulties are attributed to other causes.

How We Assess and Support Receptive Language

Assessment begins with a detailed evaluation of the child's language comprehension across a range of areas. Our pediatric SLT team uses standardized tools to assess vocabulary comprehension, sentence processing, understanding of grammatical structures, and the ability to follow instructions of increasing length and complexity. Hearing status is always considered, and we work collaboratively with families to build a complete picture of how the child communicates across different settings.

Therapy is then structured around the child's specific comprehension profile:
  • Vocabulary comprehension: building the child's understanding of words across different categories, contexts, and levels of abstraction
  • Sentence processing: working on the ability to hold and process longer and more grammatically complex sentences
  • Inferencing skills: developing the ability to read between the lines — understanding implied meaning, cause and effect, and figurative language
  • Listening strategies: teaching children practical strategies for managing situations where language is fast, complex, or delivered in noisy environments
  • Parent and teacher guidance: equipping the adults in a child's life with specific strategies to support comprehension at home and in the classroom, including how to modify language input and check for understanding without making a child feel singled out
  • Coordination with school: where appropriate and with parental consent, our team can liaise with teachers as part of a school-based support plan

Sessions are delivered in person at our Dubai Healthcare City clinic. Online sessions are available where clinically appropriate, and are particularly useful for parent coaching and strategy review.

What Families Often Notice Over Time

Progress in receptive language therapy tends to show up in daily life before it is captured in formal reassessment. Children often begin applying strategies independently, following instructions more reliably, and engaging more confidently in settings that previously felt overwhelming.

Common changes families and teachers report include:
  • Following multi-step instructions with greater consistency
  • Asking for clarification more appropriately rather than guessing or disengaging
  • Improved participation in classroom discussions and group activities
  • Reduced frustration in situations where they previously misunderstood
  • Better understanding of stories, explanations, and conversational exchanges
  • Greater confidence in social situations that depend on reading language accurately

As with all communication difficulties, progress depends on the nature and severity of the disorder, the child's age, and how consistently strategies are applied across home and school environments.

What Makes AWC Different

AWC's pediatric speech and language therapy service is delivered by a DHA-licensed clinician with experience across a wide range of receptive language presentations, including those that co-occur with autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, and learning difficulties. Our multidisciplinary setting means that where a child's needs extend into related areas — such as occupational therapy for children or psychological assessment — coordinated care is available within the same center.

Dubai's international community brings families to us from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We are experienced in assessing children who are growing up in multilingual households and in distinguishing receptive language disorder from the language processing patterns typical of children learning more than one language simultaneously. All sessions are fully confidential, and we offer flexible scheduling across weekday and weekend slots.

Ready to Get Started

If your child is consistently missing what is being said — in class, at home, or among friends — and you have been wondering whether something more than inattention is at play, an assessment is the clearest way to find out.

You can get in touch with our team to arrange an assessment or ask questions before booking. Our clinic is based at Dubai Healthcare City, with online appointments available for families who prefer them. The first session focuses on understanding your child fully — what they find difficult, what they find easy, and what a realistic plan of support looks like for them specifically.
